Keeping Pets Off Your Patio Furniture

Patio furniture is a large investment and one of the fastest ways to shorten its lifespan is to have a pet romp all over it. If pets are allowed free reign over your patio furniture then there will always be consequences.

If you want your pets on your patio chairs, patio benches and patio tables then stain and water proof them with pet friendly products. Any pet store or hardware store will carry products that can be safely used on the outdoor furniture and that will not harm your beloved pets. Simply ask a store employee which ones work best. If they cannot help then seek advice from the store manager. Be sure to let them know what type of fabric or material you are trying to protect. Is it wicker, is it a wood surface? Is it a cloth cushion, is it a synthetic?

Read over the care instructions that came with the patio furniture and that are attached to pillows and cushions. This will help you see what kind of products you can use. Make sure to follow up with additional applications of a product according to label recommendations.

The best way to keep pets off your patio furniture is to train them that these are off limits. Training takes time but the long lasting benefits of training is well worth it. If you cannot take your pet to a class, you could get a book from the local library for free! You can also buy a book from a pet-store for cheap. A pet-store will also have products that you can spray round the base of patio furniture legs to keep pets off and away from certain areas. Saying a quick, loud and stern “OFF” or “NO” immediately when you see a pet jump up onto a piece of patio furniture is good at training them also. Be consistent though. Do this each time you see you get onto the patio furniture. Call them each time you see them getting near to the patio furniture as an early warning. Also try covering your patio furniture to prevent them from getting on them.

These methods have been proven to work in keeping pets off your patio furniture but you need to remain consistent with your commands or you will confuse them. Stay the course and you will see results.
